Before your first appointment or at your first appointment

We will ask you to fill out a form outlining your medical history and questions covering all the systems in your body from an Acupuncture/Chinese Medicine point of view. In the medical history we ask about past surgeries, injuries, allergies, medications, and how your current issue began and has been treated so far. In the Acupuncture/Chinese Medicine history we ask about stress levels, energy levels, sleep and digestion and a whole lot more.

What to wear and avoid

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can roll up to your elbows and knees.

Avoid arriving on an empty stomach, overly full, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

During the consultation

Dr Elena may ask about sleep, digestion, emotions, diet, and lifestyle. She may also check your tongue, pulse, and any areas of discomfort. Treatment plans vary and may include acupuncture, moxa*, or cupping.

*Moxibustion (moxa) is a technique that involves burning dried mugwort herb (Artemisia vulgaris) near or on specific acupuncture points. It can warm the body, stimulate circulation, dissipate cold and dampness, and enhance the flow of qi (energy), helping to relieve pain, and boost immunity.

Treatment frequency

How often you'll need treatments depends on how long the issue has been present and how severe it is.

Acute conditions: often 1-2 sessions per week for 3-4 weeks

Chronic conditions: usually starting with sessions closer together and then moving weekly or fortnightly sessions over a longer period.

Most people notice progress over a series of 4-10 treatments, each treatment has a cumulative effect and allows changes to be stabilised.

Acupuncture in Pregnancy

Acupuncture can be a great tool to help navigate the health issues and aches and pains that can arise during pregnancy.

Post Birth

During the first 12 weeks, acupuncture focuses on creating a stable foundation for your pregnancy. Treatments aim to support your body as it nourishes your growing baby and adapts to rapid changes in your body. This stage of care also helps ease early pregnancy symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, morning sickness, and general discomfort.

If you’re experiencing exhaustion, dizziness, aches, nausea, vomiting, this type of support may be especially helpful. Sessions are typically twice weekly at first, then weekly until the end of the first trimester.

From weeks 13 to 27, acupuncture focuses on supporting and helping maintain a healthy, balanced pregnancy. Treatments aim to ease common discomforts such as lower back or pelvic pain, headaches, digestive issues like heartburn or reflux, and emotional symptoms including anxiety or low mood.

If you’re dealing with persistent or painful symptoms, weekly sessions may be recommended. Otherwise, many expectant mothers benefit from monthly check‑ins during this stage.

In the final weeks of pregnancy, acupuncture helps prepare your body for labour and ease late‑pregnancy discomforts. Most women come monthly until around week 30–32, then shift to weekly sessions to allow enough time for effective labour preparation.

From week 36, treatments focus on supporting and encouraging the body’s natural readiness for birth.

The weeks after birth — often called the “fourth trimester” — are a crucial time for recovery. Acupuncture can offer gentle support during this period, helping with both physical healing and emotional wellbeing. Treatments can begin whenever you feel ready and are usually scheduled weekly or fortnightly throughout the first month.
